Intermarkets Awards $5,000 Journalism Scholarship
Reston, Va. – July 31, 2008 – The Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship has been awarded to Lisa Sharp, a recent graduate of Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Intermarkets CEO, Kevin Lucido, created the scholarship to recognize an outstanding graduating high school senior in Virginia who would be majoring in journalism and who understands and promotes the importance of non-biased journalism in the United States media. The Northern Virginia Community Foundation (www.novacf.org) manages the scholarship.
"Intermarkets and the Lucido family are providing the scholarship for a number of reasons. We want to encourage students interested in contributing to the national conversation. Ongoing scandals over the years have shown that the blurring distinction between news reporting and commentary is a serious problem, creating an environment in which the public cannot ever be sure what is being reported is true or not, no matter the source,” said Kevin Lucido, Chief Executive Officer of Intermarkets, Inc.
Applicants were asked to submit an essay, writing samples, extracurricular activities and academic accomplishments. The selection began in April 2008.
Sharp was chosen from 13 applicants.
“Intermarkets and our staff have been featured in false, politically-motivated news items over the years in a variety of media outlets--including well known organizations--and the "journalists" never even bothered to contact us about what they were "reporting," to support their own political agenda without including facts. And of course, the obvious political bias in most reporting is another journalistic disservice to our country. So instead of taking the easy path and just complaining about the situation, we decided to take action. We hope the recipients of the scholarship will always remember the fundamental purpose of the award, and at least show their appreciation by adhering to high, ethical journalistic standards," Mr. Lucido explained.
Sharp was the business manager for DCHS Yearbook and her yearbook advisor gave her the paperwork for the scholarship. She also wrote for her high school newspaper and was a Teen Correspondent for the Virginian-Pilot during the past year. “I was very excited when I found out I won the scholarship. It made me feel like I could actually do a good job. I felt very accomplished,” said Sharp, who will be attending Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, VA this fall.
